Recently as I've been packing up old school notebooks and such I came across a notebook from my undergrad Business of Showbiz class I took in 2010 my senior year. In this class we sat down and wrote our 1 year, 5 year and 10 year goals. It was funny because at THAT point in my life I had no idea what I was doing after graduation... And now 7.5 years later it's interesting to see how far I've come!
The one year goals were pretty simple. Graduate college, find a job (whatever that job may be), still keep doing theatre, potentially look into grad school, and keep working towards my goals. Not as interesting as the 5 year and 10 year plans.
Flash forward to 2011 and I had a job IN the theatre where I was teaching AND directing... so it seems I stayed on task... didn't think too much further about grad school because clearly I was working without another degree. I did have fantasies about moving to NYC... but I was enjoying being settled!
Goals for 5 years later... 2015... Let's see how I did...
1.) If I went to Grad School, I will have earned my degree and working with it.
I didn't go to grad school yet at THAT point... but I was looking into potentially going!
2.) If I jumped right into the business I will have significantly bettered myself as an actor and will be working on bigger projects.
For some reason I thought I was going to be a performer... funny how things change... HOWEVER, I was continuously working as a teacher/director for youth AND acting and singing pretty consistently around the community... so that's a success! I also took workshops such as the Broadway Teachers Workshop to better my skills as a teacher/director! I WAS working on bigger projects... directing sometimes 8-10 shows a year... having shows and students winning and/or nominated for National Youth Arts Awards... I would say I did pretty good with this goal... even if it didn't work out EXACTLY as I planned!
3.) I will be financially stable -- even if that means never sleeping to work my day job and working in the theatre.
I WAS financially stable! I had bought a house and was living on my own with my two adorable cats! Being a crazy cat lady wasn't part of the 5 year plan; but I think it was a nice addition... I was working multiple jobs in order to maintain a healthy budget... and sleeping was not something that I was getting a lot of... but I don't regret the decisions I was making to keep living my lifestyle! So, I claim this as another win for me!
4.) I will hopefully be in a healthy relationship with someone who understands my life decisions and long hours.
Well, there's always room for improvement... but I DO have an amazingly supportive family as well as friends who understand my dreams and help me work towards those goals! Sometimes they also pull those crazy long hours with me to help me succeed! I don't know what I would do without these people in my life!
Goals for 10 years later... This will be 2020... I still have time...
1.) I will be working steadily in the theatre somewhere -- whether that be acting, directing, teaching or stage managing.
A.) Make and maintain good connections
B.) Continuously work on my craft.
C.) Never be lazy.
I would say that where I'm at RIGHT NOW --- having completed grad school with a perfect 4.0 all three semesters -- I have continued working on my craft AND have made and maintained good connections. I would say that never have I stopped and been lazy... I personally take on too much on a daily basis! I have some jobs lined up and already on the schedule to act, direct and produce at our community theatre in 2018! I think THAT goal is right on track!
2.) Continue to be financially stable.
So far I'm doing okay... ready to move back into my house in Arkansas, get back to working full time and begin paying off all these student loans... we'll have to check back on this financially stable business... but I think I should be okay!
3.) Be in a healthy relationship.
Well... everyone needs something to work towards, right? But once again... I wouldn't change the amazingly supportive family and friends I have backing me everyday. I am extremely blessed to be surrounded by so many wonderful people who push me and believe in me obtaining my goals!
As we're approaching the new year I want to sit down and write out some new 1 year, 5 year and 10 year goals for myself. Gotta shoot for the moon to land among the stars! Who wants to set some goals with me? My next post will be about those goals. Stay tuned!
